The cross is a universal symbol of faith, devotion and redemption for those who observe the Easter season all over the world.
The Christian celebration of Easter Sunday is April 17 this year, a culmination of the Easter season that recognizes the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, who dies, is buried and rises from the dead to give humankind eternal life. For western Christians, the Easter season begins on Ash Wednesday with the observance of Lent, 40 days of fasting, repentance, moderation and spiritual discipline in preparation for Easter, otherwise known as Resurrection Day. According to Scripture, Christians believe that through the miracle of Easter, Jesus pays the penalty for original sin, giving all believers eternal life with the Lord. Jesus’ crucifixion, commemorated on Good Friday, his burial and resurrection three days later is described in these passages from the Bible: Matthew 27:27-28:8; Mark 15:16-16:19; Luke 23:26-24:35; and John 19:16-20:30.
Easter is celebrated all over the world as a religious holiday and also as a rite of spring, which is where the legend of the Easter Bunny comes into play. The folkloric character originates with the Lutherans of Germany, a good “egg” so to speak that carries colorful goodies including eggs in a basket, gifting them to deserving children the night before Easter. Actually, the word, Easter is of German origin and derived from the Old English, Ēastre, the name of a goddess associated with spring.
A Meaningful Gift at Easter
Whatever your reason for celebration on Easter Sunday, the holiday embodies the spirit of new beginnings, of great sacrifice and great love, of spending quality time with family and friends and sharing joy that will last a lifetime. After the cross becomes the official symbol of Christianity in A.D. 325, it also comes to mean undying faith to the Catholic Church. The gift of a personalized engraved cross at Easter reminds the recipient of Jesus’ sacrifice and the new hope it gives to humanity, becoming an elegant, meaningful keepsake for relatives, friends, clergy or special people in our lives.
