Whether your child is competing in a soccer tournament or you are beating the competition in the sales challenge at work, America loves a winner. One of the ways to show appreciation for winners is to give them a trophy. Here’s why trophies matter.

1. True Competitors Thrive on CompetitionFor those who love to compete, they only get better through the hard work of competition. Earning a trophy for competition usually moves the competitor up in the ranks of their chosen obsession (can you say, U.S. Open Tennis anyone?). Even though competitors don’t need a medal or trophy to remind them of their quest to be the best, they can still reminisce about the lessons learned and the feeling of victory every time they walk into their trophy room or show them to their friends. Those memories can also be great motivation for excelling at the next competition.

2. Kids Care About RecognitionWhen asked, young children will tell you they play for the love of the game. They simply love the opportunity to go outside and play with other kids – maybe even learn a thing or two from a great coach. Even though they care about the experience first, if they excel at baseball or soccer or cheerleading or tennis or anything, for that matter- they will appreciate when others recognize them for their accomplishments, especially their parents.

3. Trophies Make Adults ProudWhat’s wrong with feeling a swell in the ‘ole chest when someone awards you or your children with awards, trophies and kudos? Nothing. For those of certain age, receiving an award or trophy is a great “Polaroid” moment, a chance to take that picture destined for Mom’s or Grandmother’s or Auntie’s refrigerator door. For almost everyone these days, it’s the selfie that gets posted to social media as the icing on top of a great accomplishment.

4. Being Exceptional MattersIf you are an exceptional writer or artist or player or thought leader, this matters to people on a variety of levels. You very well can be an inspiration for others to achieve their best. What if they don’t know how exceptional you are? Achieving an award and displaying the trophy you receive as recognition is a tasteful, respectful way to show your own gratefulness for such an honor.
