Although Americans start to celebrate a Mother’s Day during the 1860’s, an idea conceived by activist Ann Reeves Jarvis to bring together the mothers of Confederate and Union soldiers, the holiday is not commercialized until 1908 when Ms. Jarvis’s daughter Anna honors her own mother by making Mother’s Day a national holiday -one that retailers support, inspired by its great potential. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaims the second Sunday in May a holiday in honor of “that tender, gentle army, the mothers of America.”
