Laser Cutting File Guidelines & Design Requirements

PlaqueMaker

Preparing your artwork correctly helps ensure clean cuts, precise detail, and fast turnaround.

This page outlines our laser cutting file guidelines and design requirements to help you understand how files should be submitted for custom laser cut products. For a complete overview of our laser cutting service, materials, and capabilities, visit our main Laser Cutting Services page.

Don’t worry if your file isn’t perfect — every order includes free professional file review and a proof before production. Our designers refine and optimize artwork to ensure the best possible laser cutting results.

Accepted File Types for Laser Cutting

For the most accurate results, we recommend submitting vector-based artwork.

Preferred file formats:

  • AI (Adobe Illustrator)
  • SVG
  • EPS
  • Vector PDF

Also accepted:

  • High-resolution JPG
  • PNG
  • Standard PDF files

Vector files are ideal for laser cutting because they contain precise path information that the laser can follow. Raster images (such as JPG or PNG) may require conversion before cutting, but can be used for engraving or printed elements.

If you're unsure whether your file is suitable, our team will review and adjust it as needed before production.

Vector Artwork Guidelines

Vector artwork produces the cleanest and most accurate laser cut results.

For best performance:

  • Artwork should be created at full scale (100% size)
  • Text should be converted to outlines when possible
  • Cut shapes should be clearly defined
  • Extremely thin or fragile elements should be avoided

If adjustments are needed for proper laser cutting, our design team will make refinements and provide a proof for approval.

Minimum Detail & Structural Considerations

Laser cutting allows for intricate shapes and precise detail, but material thickness and strength affect what is possible.

When designing laser cut products, keep in mind:

  • Very thin sections may reduce structural stability
  • Small interior cutouts should have adequate spacing
  • Thicker materials require slightly more tolerance than thinner materials
  • Outdoor applications may require more durable material selections

Different materials — such as acrylic, stainless steel, brass, titanium, or bamboo — each have unique performance characteristics. Our team will review your design in the context of the material you choose to ensure durability and clean cutting results.

Maximum Size & Material Thickness

We offer laser cutting for a wide range of material sizes and thicknesses.

Maximum sheet size: up to 48" x 48", depending on material and design.

Available thickness options vary by material. Thinner materials allow finer detail, while thicker materials provide greater strength and dimensional stability.

If you need assistance selecting the right material and thickness for your application, we are happy to guide you.

Laser Cutting vs Engraving File Preparation

Laser cutting and laser engraving use different production methods.

  • Laser cutting follows vector paths to cut completely through material.
  • Laser engraving removes surface material to create contrast, depth, or texture.

If your project includes both cutting and engraving, simply indicate which areas should be engraved. Our designers will prepare your file correctly during proofing.

For a full comparison of these methods, visit our Laser Cutting vs Engraving guide.

Common File Issues We Correct During Review

Because every file is reviewed before production, most issues are resolved during proofing.

Typical adjustments include:

  • Converting raster images to vector format when possible
  • Cleaning up overlapping or duplicate paths
  • Refining small details for structural integrity
  • Adjusting artwork for proper scaling
  • Optimizing designs for specific materials

You will receive a free professional proof showing exactly how your laser cut product will be manufactured. You are not charged unless you approve it.

I was delighted that our logo was perfectly inscribed on our commemorative plaque! The plaque design feature on the website was easy to use. Great customer service!

Took me a little bit to figure out the online tool in order to customize text size and font. I received my two plaques and am very happy. They will be used on my antique tractor when I drive it in parades. I appreciate your online approval process in order for me to review proof before actual production.

Our Professional File Review Process

Every custom laser cutting order goes through a structured review process:

  1. File inspection and compatibility check
  2. Material and thickness evaluation
  3. Structural integrity review
  4. Optimization for laser performance
  5. Free proof sent for approval

This process ensures accuracy, quality, and consistency across every laser cut product we produce.
