Today is the twentieth anniversary of 9/11 and we take a moment to remember what this day means to our country.

“When you choose to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11, you are playing an important part in memorializing those who were killed, honoring the sacrifices of the first responders, and remembering the spirit of unity that emerged in the aftermath of 9/11,” Joe Daniels, President and CEO of the National September 11 Memorial and Museum in New York City, pictured below.

Never Forget. Nearly three thousand innocent men, women and children lost their lives in the 9/11 attacks on the United States. In December of that year, former President Bush proclaimed September 11 as “Patriot Day,” and in 2009, Congress requested the observance of September 11 as an annually recognized “National Day of Service and Remembrance.” In 2013, President Obama proclaimed September 11 as Patriot Day and National Day of Service and Remembrance, when we not only honor the individuals who lost their lives on 9/11 by displaying the United States flag at half-staff, we pay tribute by observing this day with a moment of silence, beginning at 8:46 a.m. EDT, and by participating in community service.

“We can honor those we lost by building a Nation worthy of their memories. Let us also live up to the selfless example of the heroes who gave of themselves in the face of such great evil,” President Obama writes in the proclamation. “As we mark the anniversary of September 11, I invite all Americans to observe a National Day of Service and Remembrance by uniting in the same extraordinary way we came together after the attacks. Like the Americans who chose compassion when confronted with cruelty, we can show our love for one another by devoting our time and talents to those in need.”
