“He knows if you’ve been bad or good,

so be good for goodness sake!”

Legend has it that Santa Claus is a folkloric figure who brings gifts to the homes of good, Christian children on December 24, the night before Christmas Day. The modern day Mr. Claus actually has origins in history – his name is said to derive from Sinterklaas, the Dutch pronunciation of Saint Nicholas – that Greek dude who is also a bishop and gift-giver of presents to needy children, with a little bit of the German god Odin thrown in for good measure –all to perpetrate the romance of a magical sleigh ride across the sky during the pagan midwinter event of Yule.

Popularized in the United States and Canada in the 19th century through poem and caricature, Santa Claus has quite the joyous social media profile: he is a portly, white-bearded guy with eyes that sparkle behind tiny round spectacles (Warby Parker’s perhaps?). He wears grand threads of red with fluffy white collar and cuffs and a black leather belt with boots to match – plus he carries a humongous bag full of gifts for the young and young at heart.

They say that Santa makes a list of all children everywhere. Depending on their behavior during the year, each child lands in one of two categories. Then, Santa delivers presents such as toys and candy to all the good children the world over, while all the bad kids get coal in their stockings –or worse. This all occurs on one single night: Christmas Eve. Santa accomplishes this feat with the help of elves who make toys in his workshop at the North Pole and flying reindeer to pull his sleigh. Ride on, Santa!

Santa Claus Is Coming To Town

The “naughty” or “nice” part of Santa’s idol-ness is really etched on our devices with the 1934 song, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town.

You better watch out, You better not cry

You better not pout, I’m telling you why

Santa Claus is comin’ to town

He’s making a list, He’s checking it twice

He’s gonna find out

Who’s naughty or nice

Santa Claus is comin’ to town

He sees you when you’re sleeping, He knows when you’re awake

He knows if you’ve been bad or good

So be good for goodness sake

Santa Claus is comin’ to town

The kids in girl and boyland, Will have a jubilee

They’re gonna build a toyland, All around the Christmas tree

So you better watch out, You better not cry

You better not pout, I’m telling you why

Santa Claus is comin’ to town
