If you’ve been working at home over the last year, chances are good that you are still figuring out how to make yourself feel most comfortable while on the job in your own home.

For some people, working at home can be super easy – and in fact preferred – compared to working in a traditional office. For others, working at home can be hard, as people struggle to get the same level of attention and productivity while in the comfort of their own home.

For some, all they need in order to be super productive and happy in their office at home are a few stylistic changes.

Think about the location

One really important aspect of creating a great office at home is the location. Obviously, you aren’t going to want to use the best room in your home or apartment to create an office, but you also should not be restricting yourself to working in a tiny little side-closet, either. In the end, you will ideally have a fair amount of room and a window close by so you can enjoy natural light throughout the day.

Decorate it like an office

Sometimes, all it takes for a room in your home to feel like an office is for it to be decorated like one. Get a great office chair, put a personalized metal sign on your desk so that you really feel like you are sitting down at a work desk every morning. While these kinds of things may seem like they’ll have little to now impact, the truth is that the environment will really help you feel like you are at work.

Organize your space

Another reason why people sometimes struggle to be super productive in their office at home is because they let the clutter of the rest of their home invade the clutter in their office. Instead, make the most out of your space and create a sense of order and simplicity by organizing your office at home as if it is in a larger office setting. Keep your desk tidy and clear of clutter, keep the wires and various chargers for your electronics tucked away and untangled, and really just make the most out of your space to improve the quality and feel of your workday.

Don’t be afraid to switch it up

If something isn’t working for you in your at-home office, you shouldn’t be afraid to switch it up. Whether that means changing the style of your office, or going mobile and working off your laptop in a different room of your house, the choice is yours! One of the best parts of working at home is the freedom that can come with it. Don’t forget to take advantage of that fact and shake things up if you are getting fed up with staying in one spot.

In the end, your office at home is what you make of it. If it’s not working for you as it is, start thinking of ways that you can improve the space to improve your experience.
