The Meaning of November 11

In the eleventh hour of the eleventh day in the eleventh month of 1918, a temporary cessation of hostilities between the Allied nations and Germany is reached, bringing an end to the fighting of World War I. Even though the official finish of “the war to end all wars” is recognized a full seven months after this armistice -when the Treaty of Versailles is signed in France on June 28, 1919- November 11 remains steadfast in the hearts of men as the end of The Great War.

The Act of 1938 makes November 11 in each year the legal holiday of Armistice Day, honoring the veterans of World War I and dedicated to world peace.

In 1954 the 83rd Congress amends the Act of 1938 by striking the word “armistice” from its paragraphs, replacing it with the word “veterans.” With the edit, November 11 becomes a day to honor American veterans of all wars. President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaims, “In order to insure proper and widespread observance of this anniversary, all veterans, all veterans’ organizations, and the entire citizenry will wish to join hands in the common purpose.”

Present Day

Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says it not only preserves the historical significance of the date, it amplifies the purpose of Veterans Day: A celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. We couldn’t agree more.
