No road trip, excursion or vacation fun starts without the keys

So for many of us, the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer include time off from busy work schedules, as well as packing up the car or RV with assorted accoutrements for a road trip, vacation or travel with no particular plans.

Given how much Americans enjoy travel, it’s no wonder that we’ve developed the most sophisticated modes of transportation available- everything from cars and motorboats to RV’s, ATV’s, motorcycles, personal watercraft, scooters, planes and more. In the United States, recreational vehicles per se are used for the pursuit of happiness, whether on the road, in the water or flying in the air. The first question that needs a knowledgeable answer is, “Where are the keys?” Followed by the number two classic, “Are we there yet?”

Americans Love to Drive

The public’s love and fascination with driving is not only notable, it fuels a variety of recreational activities most of us cannot live without. Take RVing, for example. Millions of people are traveling around the country in RV’s customized with places for motorcycles, bikes, ATV’s and more, all to fit their needs. The massive RV community tends to treat their RV like a home away from home, so they’ve created an entire lifestyle to go along with RVing. Thousands of RV parks dot the landscape, offering relaxing places to hook up, whether you’re on vacation, retirement or simply passing through. Big RV festivals are a summer highlight at big venues with music, food, merchandise, prizes and –of course- reasons to show off customized RVs.

How Did RVing Begin?

Some say the RVing lifestyle begins in Canada around 1910. The house trailer is built on truck chassis, which creates a new way of living while on the road. Motorhomes start to house workers and even military personnel –anyone who has to be “on location,” in remote areas and finds it very convenient to have a kitchen, sleeping quarters and other amenities all within reaching distance, such as movie crews and the news media. Soon the idea of customizing inspires fans -and engineers- to figure out ways to add all sorts of specialized features to motorhomes that enhance comfort and fuel efficiency. Better roads and interstate highways make travel and access to remote regions easier, and the modern recreational vehicle –the RV- is born.

As popularity grows from the 1930s to the 1950s, people begin to perfect the unique RV lifestyle, likened that of “long haul truckers, with much more luxury.” We’ll say! Some people make their RV a first home. They’ll get a post office box and just keep on rolling. With the advent of technology such as WiFi (and the diesel engine) the RV fan can work, keep in touch with family and friends plus enjoy streaming entertainment just about anywhere in the country, from the comfort of their own RV.

As long as they can find the keys!
